UFC 138 marked the company’s first event in the U.K. since October 2010′s UFC 120 card. The company visited Birmingham once before in October 2008, when Michael Bisping and Chris Leben headlined UFC 89. UFC 138drew a reported 10,823 attendees and generated a live gate of $1.5 million. Che Mills, Terry Etim, Renan Barao and Brad Pickett each earned $70,000 fight-night bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 138 event. UFC 138 took place at LG Arena in Birmingham, England. Spike TV airs the fight in the U.S. via tape delay (while other countries air it live), and Facebook streamed the preliminary card live worldwide.
MAIN CARD BREAKDOWN:
Mark Munoz is convinced he’s ready for a title shot following a two-round beating of fellow middleweight Chris Leben that forced the fighter’s corner to call it quits before the third, Munoz was declared the TKO winner of the main event of Saturday’s UFC 138 event.
Renan Barao takes his 27th victory during UFC 138. It didn’t take long for this Brazilian to silence the crowd. Both fighters came out swinging and it continued throughout the fight until Barao landed an knee that took down Pickett. After a few devastating blows Pickett gave up his back and Barao secured a Rear Naked Choke.
Thiago Alves seemed to be in rare vintage form, despite failing to make weight the first time around. He stepped back on the scale and made weight. Alves didn’t need a fancy walkout song or a comedic costume enhanced with a cigar. Alves came into the cage very calm and controlled the fight to his satisfaction. An amazing career in the UFC, this was a must win for Alves. After 19 fights in the octagon he scored his first submission at UFC 138.
